Recruiting guide · 2026
How to get recruited for college soccer.
You don't need a $3,000 recruiting service. You don't need to play ECNL. You need a target list, a real highlight reel, and the discipline to email coaches every week. Here's exactly how it works.
The honest truth
College coaches don't find you. You find them. Even the "discovered" players almost always sent the first email. That's the whole game.
Build one short, honest profile
Coaches scan profiles in under 30 seconds. Position, grad year, height, club/HS team, GPA, SAT/ACT if you have it, and 2–3 stats that matter for your position. That's it.
Cut a 3–5 minute highlight reel
Game film beats training clips. Start with your best 30 seconds, jersey color/number in the title, full game link at the end. No music. Upload to YouTube (unlisted is fine) and put the link in every email.
Build a target list of 40–80 schools
Split your list into reach (10), realistic (40+), and safety (20+) across divisions. Don't only email D1 — D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO recruit more players, faster, and with real scholarship money in many cases.
Email the actual coach — by name
Find the head coach and recruiting coordinator on the program's roster page. Always email both. Subject line: 'Class of [YEAR] [Position] interested in [School] Soccer'. Keep the email under 150 words.
Follow up — twice, politely
Most replies come from the second or third email, not the first. Wait 7–10 days. Reference something specific about the program (recent result, a player from your area). Then move on if no response.
Track everything
If you can't tell who you've emailed, when, who replied, and who's interested, you'll lose offers. Use a spreadsheet — or a free tool like Recruit Connect that does it for you.
